Tor (The Onion Router) is free, open source software that routes your internet traffic through a circuit of volunteer operated relays, wrapping it in multiple layers of encryption. Websites see a Tor exit relay instead of your real IP address, which makes your location and browsing activity far harder to trace.
The network is maintained by the Tor Project, and it also powers .onion sites, services that can only be accessed over Tor. Most people connect through Tor Browser, which the project advises downloading only from its official site.
Tor exit relays are public by design. The Tor Project publishes the current exit addresses as a plain text bulk exit list and as a DNS based service called TorDNSEL, so any website can recognize that a request arrived from the Tor network.
A Tor check works by comparing your visible IP address against that Tor exit node IP database. If your IP matches a known exit relay, your traffic is coming through Tor. If it does not match, your traffic is not arriving from a known Tor exit: you may be connecting directly, through a VPN or proxy, or through an exit relay too new to appear in the list. Helping users verify their own Tor usage goes back to an early Tor design proposal by Steven J. Murdoch (proposal 131).
List based detection has limits: a brand new exit relay may not appear in a snapshot yet, and cached lists can lag behind the live network. Running two independent checks, this page plus the official checker, gives you the most reliable answer.
The check is a single request to the lookup service, which determines your public IP from that request. This page reads only the Tor verdict from the response, keeps it in memory, and discards it when you leave; how ipapi.is handles requests is described in its own privacy policy. The Tor Project runs the official checker at check.torproject.org. Inside Tor Browser it reports “Congratulations. This browser is configured to use Tor.” Outside Tor it reports “Sorry. You are not using Tor.” along with your visible IP address. Because the same organization publishes the exit list itself, it is the authoritative answer.
