SAP ECC End of Life Is 2027: What It Means for Testing, AI and Your S/4HANA Move
SAP ECC support ends Dec 31, 2027, and SAP's AI agents need the cloud. Here's what the deadline means for testing, and how KaneAI and Kane CLI help.
Published on:
The SAP ECC end of life date isn't new. SAP set it in February 2020.
What has changed in 2026 is the cost of waiting. SAP told CIO.com in May that it has no plans to extend the 2027 deadline. At Sapphire it then made most of its AI agent portfolio depend on moving to cloud ERP. And every S/4HANA system you go live on will need regression testing twice a year for the rest of its life.
This piece covers the dates, the AI question, and the testing work that follows. It ends with how SAP teams use KaneAI and Kane CLI for the web and mobile side of S/4HANA.
TL;DR
SAP ECC end of life starts on December 31, 2027, when mainstream maintenance for ECC 6.0 ends. Paid extended maintenance runs to 2030, and a narrow private-edition option reaches 2033 and beyond. SAP's new AI agents are built for its cloud ERP, so the migration is also how you get access to AI. Testing is the step that most often delays it.
What Should SAP Teams Know Before 2027?
- Will SAP extend the SAP 2027 deadline? No. SAP told CIO.com in May 2026 that it has no plans to push SAP ECC end of support past 2027.
- Is extended maintenance free after SAP ECC end of maintenance? No. Extended maintenance from January 2028 to December 2030 costs a premium of two percentage points, and the alternative, customer-specific maintenance, brings no new legal or tax updates.
- Do SAP's Joule agents run on ECC? Largely no. SAP built its Joule assistants and agents for cloud ERP, so an SAP S/4HANA migration is also the route to SAP's AI for most ECC customers.
- Does an ECC to S/4HANA migration end the upgrade cycle? No. S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition ships two major releases a year, and the customer owns the regression testing in the three weeks between the test-system and production upgrades.
- Does KaneAI test the classic SAP GUI desktop client? No. TestMu AI's KaneAI covers Fiori, SAPUI5, mobile, and cross-application flows, while SAP GUI transactions and ABAP logic stay with SAP-native tools such as eCATT and SAP Test Automation by Tricentis.
- Can Kane CLI gate an SAP CI pipeline? Yes. Kane CLI gives SDETs building custom Fiori and SAP BTP apps the same testing agent in the terminal, with typed exit codes for CI gates and an evidence pack for every run.
When Is SAP ECC End of Life?
Mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC 6.0 (enhancement packages 6-8) ends on December 31, 2027. After that, you can pay for extended maintenance until the end of 2030, or move to customer-specific maintenance, which has no new legal or tax updates.
| Date | What ends or starts | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| End of 2025 | Support for ECC EHP 0-5 ended | Older ECC releases |
| Dec 31, 2027 | Mainstream maintenance ends for ECC 6.0 EHP 6-8 and Business Suite 7 | Every ECC customer |
| Jan 1, 2028 - Dec 31, 2030 | Optional extended maintenance, at a premium of two percentage points on the maintenance base | Customers who opt in |
| 2031 - 2033 (up to Dec 31, 2035) | SAP ERP, private edition, transition option | Only large systems (2 TB or more) that move to ERP private edition on HANA before end of 2030, meet SAP's readiness rules and buy the max success plan |
| 2040 | SAP's stated commitment for S/4HANA | S/4HANA customers |
Two details are easy to miss. First, the transition option isn't a free extension. Customers who signed up in 2026 pay a 20% uplift, and SAP hasn't published the uplift for 2027 or later.
Second, S/4HANA has its own clock. Since the 2023 release, each S/4HANA release gets seven years of mainstream maintenance on a two-year cycle.
Per the UK & Ireland SAP User Group, S/4HANA 2021 support ends in 2026 and 2022 support ends in 2027. Moving off ECC doesn't end the upgrade cycle. It makes it permanent.
How Many SAP Customers Are Still on ECC?
Roughly half. According to Gartner estimates reported by CIO.com in June 2025, about 39% of roughly 35,000 ECC customers had moved by the end of 2024. Gartner expects about 17,000 to still be on ECC in 2027, and about 13,000 in 2030.
User-group surveys tell the same story:
- DSAG Investment Report 2026 (German-speaking SAP users, published Feb 2026): 54% of respondents still run ECC or older Business Suite, down from 68% in 2024. Among ECC users, 37% plan to switch by the end of 2027, and nearly half are aiming for 2030 on extended maintenance.
- ASUG 2026 Pulse (as reported by CIO.com, May 2026): 56% of members are live on S/4HANA or migrating, up from 45% in 2024. Budget constraints are the top challenge at 61%, and ASUG links them mainly to S/4HANA projects.
In plain terms: thousands of companies will run the biggest ERP project of the decade in the same 24 months, competing for the same consultants and the same test windows.
How Important Is AI Adoption for SAP Customers?
Very, because SAP has tied its AI agents to the move. At Sapphire in May 2026, SAP announced more than 50 Joule Assistants coordinating more than 200 agents.
On-premises S/4HANA and ECC customers get only selected AI scenarios, and only if they commit to moving most of their landscape to cloud ERP. RISE customers get three assistants in year one, and GROW customers get the full set.
SAP's Sebastian Steinhaeuser put it bluntly to CIO.com: the assistants and agents are "designed for cloud."
At SAP Connect on October 6, 2026, SAP began rolling out Joule Work to customers. Agents are available now for the public edition, and private-edition availability is planned by year-end.
Customers aren't waiting. In DSAG's 2026 survey, 43% of companies had implemented AI use cases. But of those in production, 77% ran on non-SAP AI and only 3% on SAP's.
ASUG's February 2026 research found 24% of members in active AI deployment and 10% at enterprise scale.
Our read: AI is now the business case for the migration, not a side benefit. It also raises the testing bar.
An agent that posts a goods receipt or approves an invoice acts on your ERP data. If the processes underneath aren't tested and stable, Joule will run the broken ones automatically.
Why Is Testing the Bottleneck in an S/4HANA Migration?
Because S/4HANA changes the data model, the UI and the release cadence all at once, and the customer owns the regression testing.
- The process layer changes. Simplified tables, Business Partner replacing customer and vendor masters, new finance structures: every custom report, interface and Z-transaction has to be re-proven.
- The UI moves to the browser. SAP Fiori is S/4HANA's target user experience, and in the cloud editions it is the main way users work. Hundreds of GUI-based scripts don't carry over to Fiori.
- Releases never stop. S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition ships two major releases a year, in February and August. Customers get six weeks' notice. The test system is upgraded about three weeks before production, and the regression testing in that window falls to the customer or partner.
- Automation is thin. In an older ASUG/Tricentis survey (2020), most SAP organizations had automated less than 25% of their test suites and named testing as the top cause of release delays. We haven't seen a newer survey, but we don't hear many teams claim the picture has changed.
If your regression pack takes four weeks to run by hand, a three-week upgrade window doesn't fit. That's the core problem automation has to solve.
Which Parts of SAP Should You Test With Which Tool?
Split the landscape by interface. Use SAP-native tools for SAP GUI and ABAP. Use an AI-native platform for Fiori, web, mobile and the non-SAP apps around SAP. No single tool is best at all of it, and pretending otherwise is how test programs stall.
| Layer | Examples | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| SAP GUI and ABAP back end | Classic transactions, BAPIs at code level, custom ABAP | SAP-native tools (eCATT, SAP Cloud ALM test automation, which SAP ships with Tricentis) |
| Fiori and SAPUI5 web apps | Purchase orders, approvals, Fiori launchpad, S/4HANA Cloud, BTP apps | KaneAI (natural language) and Kane CLI (developers) |
| Mobile | Fiori on iOS and Android browsers, custom mobile apps built on BTP | KaneAI on TestMu AI Real Device Cloud |
| Cross-application flows | Order-to-cash across S/4HANA, Salesforce, ServiceNow and portals | KaneAI end-to-end tests, run at scale on HyperExecute |
| APIs and integrations | OData services, integration points | KaneAI API and network checks, Kane CLI API tests |
To be explicit: KaneAI doesn't drive the classic SAP GUI desktop client or ABAP-level logic. Our SAP testing guide covers those tools. KaneAI is built for the layer that grows after S/4HANA: Fiori, the browser, mobile, and the business processes that cross from SAP into everything else.
How Can SAP Teams Use KaneAI and Kane CLI for Web and Mobile Testing?
KaneAI lets SAP key users and testers write tests in plain English. Kane CLI gives SDETs and developers the same agent in the terminal and in CI. Both produce evidence you can attach to a release decision.
KaneAI for SAP Key Users, Functional Consultants and Testers
- Plain-English authoring. A finance key user can write "Create a purchase order for vendor 1000, approve it as the manager, then post the goods receipt and check the invoice is blocked for price variance." No ABAP or Selenium skills needed.
- Fiori-aware element handling. KaneAI resolves elements from SAP metadata and APIs at runtime and handles Fiori's dynamic IDs and Shadow DOM, which is where recorded scripts usually break.
- Self-healing after SAP updates. When the February or August release moves a field, KaneAI proposes the fix and shows the diff for review.
- Cross-module and cross-app flows. It handles flows such as MM-to-FI and SD-to-WM, and ones that leave SAP entirely, like a Salesforce opportunity that becomes an S/4HANA sales order.
- Data-driven runs. Variables, secrets and datasets let one procure-to-pay test run across company codes, plants and currencies.
- On-premises and hybrid. KaneAI connects to SAP environments in the cloud, on premises or hybrid through encrypted tunneling.
- Audit-ready evidence. Each run keeps execution logs, screenshots, SAP transaction traces and video, which helps with SOX-style sign-offs.
Kane CLI for SDETs and Developers Building on S/4HANA and BTP
Teams building side-by-side extensions on BTP, or custom Fiori apps, need tests that live in the repository and run in the pipeline.
npm install -g @testmuai/kane-cli
kane-cli run "log in to the Fiori launchpad, open Manage Purchase Orders, create a PO and verify status 'Awaiting Approval'"
- Runs on real Chrome, on Android Emulator and iOS Simulator, and against APIs. Real-device support is listed as coming soon.
- Typed exit codes (0 pass, 1 fail, 2 setup error, 3 timeout) make it a clean gate in GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins or any CI.
- Each run ends in a tamper-evident evidence pack (steps, screenshots, console and network logs, verdict), shareable in the pull request.
- Any recorded flow exports as Playwright code, so your team keeps its tests if you change tools.
Mobile: Test Where Your Users Actually Work
SAP's old Fiori Client app reached end of maintenance at the end of 2022, so most mobile SAP use now runs through Fiori in mobile browsers or through custom apps.
Run the same KaneAI tests on TestMu AI's Real Device Cloud, which has 10,000+ physical iOS and Android devices. Use it for warehouse scanners on Android, approvals on iPhones, and field-service apps in low-bandwidth conditions.
Scale: Fit Regression Into the Upgrade Window
A three-week window between the test-system upgrade and production only works if the full suite runs in hours. HyperExecute runs suites up to 70% faster than a traditional grid. It adds flaky-test detection and AI root-cause analysis, so failures get triaged the same day.
Seven Reasons SAP Customers Are Moving Their Web and Mobile Testing to KaneAI and Kane CLI
- The deadline compresses everything. With 2027 fixed, test design can't be a 6-month specialist project. Plain-English authoring lets the people who know the process write the tests.
- Fiori breaks recorded scripts. Runtime element resolution and self-healing target the exact failure mode of dynamic Fiori UIs.
- Two releases a year, forever. Automation that heals and runs in parallel turns each upgrade from a project into a routine.
- SAP isn't your only system. Order-to-cash and hire-to-retire cross Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday and custom portals. One platform tests the whole flow, not just the SAP part.
- Developers and business users on one platform. KaneAI for key users and testers, Kane CLI for SDETs, the same tests and the same evidence.
- AI agents need tested ground. Before Joule automates a process, prove the process works. Evidence packs give you something to show auditors.
- No lock-in. Playwright export keeps your test assets portable.
A note on proof: in one TestMu AI SAP pilot described in our SAP guide, an education-technology customer automated 400 SAP test cases in 3.5 months. The team reported 60% less manual testing time and 50% more coverage. It's a single engagement, not a benchmark, so we'd rather show you on your own processes.
A 90-Day Test Plan for ECC Customers (Whatever Your Go-Live Date)
- Days 1-30: Inventory. List your top 50 business processes by revenue or compliance impact, and tag each by interface (GUI, Fiori, mobile, cross-app).
- Days 1-30: Baseline. Capture how those processes behave on ECC today, with evidence, so you can compare after migration.
- Days 31-60: Automate the Fiori and cross-app layer. Author the 50 processes in KaneAI. Wire Kane CLI into the CI for BTP and custom Fiori apps.
- Days 31-60: Cover GUI and ABAP with your SAP-native tooling.
- Days 61-90: Rehearse an upgrade. Run the full suite against a sandbox upgrade on real devices and browsers, and time it against a three-week window.
- Day 90: Decide with evidence. Go-live and AI-agent rollout decisions should cite test evidence, not status reports.
Conclusion: Treat SAP ECC End of Life as a Testing Deadline
SAP ECC end of life on December 31, 2027 is fixed, the extensions are expensive, and SAP's AI agents need the cloud. The organizations that finish on time will be the ones that build testing they can repeat every six months.
Keep SAP-native tools for GUI and ABAP. Put the growing Fiori, mobile and cross-application layer on SAP test automation with KaneAI, and give your developers Kane CLI.
