Fireside Chat: The Economics of AI Agents: How Startups Are Rethinking Value and Monetization | TestMu 2026
For twenty years, software economics rested on one unit: a human, a login, a subscription. Agents break that unit. In this fireside chat, Vibhor Rastogi, Managing Director at Citi Ventures, will explore the emerging landscape of agentic pricing. The session will dissect the mechanics, trade-offs, and strategic implications of various monetization frameworks, including outcome, consumption, and productivity-multiplier. Drawing on observations from the venture ecosystem and how leading startups are experimenting with these models, Vibhor will discuss how founders can align their pricing with the actual value their agents deliver, without prescribing a single "correct" path. Founders will walk away with a framework for evaluating their own pricing strategies in the agentic era.
Choosing a model is a strategic bet, not packaging. It requires robust technical infrastructure for real-time metering, clear audit trails for billing, and unambiguous definitions of "completed tasks" or "outcomes."
Outcome pricing needs an agreed, auditable definition of "success." Founders must identify the value metric that most closely correlates with their customer's success.
"Agent" is doing a lot of work as a word. Telling reasoning systems from orchestration is largely an evidence problem.
The optimal model depends heavily on the target customer segment (enterprise vs. SMB), the predictability of the agent's workflows, and the maturity of the product category. Experimentation and iterative feedback are essential.
