What Can You Do with Number Sorter?

The Number Sorter allows you to:

How to Use Sort Number?

• Input Numbers: Enter the numbers you want to sort into the provided text area.
• Choose Sorting Method: Select whether you want to sort in ascending or descending order.
• Apply Sorting: Click the 'Sort Number' button to reorder your numbers. Note that by default, “Auto Update” is turned on.
• View Results: The sorted numbers will be displayed in the output area, ready for you to copy or analyze further.

Numeric sorting versus text sorting

The most common surprise when sorting numbers is getting 1, 10, 2 instead of 1, 2, 10. That happens when values are compared as text, character by character, rather than by their numeric value.

This tool parses each entry as a number first, so ordering follows arithmetic rather than character codes. Decimals, negatives and values in scientific notation are all placed correctly.

• Text order: 1, 10, 2, 20, 3 , each character compared in turn.
• Numeric order: 1, 2, 3, 10, 20 - values compared by magnitude.
• Negatives: -5 sorts below 0, not alongside 5.
• Decimals: 2.5 sits between 2 and 3 rather than after 25.

Preparing a list of numbers

Formatting picked up from spreadsheets is the usual reason a value refuses to sort. Stripping it before sorting keeps every entry comparable.

• Thousands separators: 1,000 may be read as two values unless the separator is removed.
• Currency symbols and units: strip these so only the numeric part remains.
• Blank rows: empty entries are skipped rather than sorted to the top.
• Mixed separators: pick commas, spaces or one number per line and stay consistent.
