What is a Cursive Text Generator?

How does the Cursive Text Generator work?

Unicode reserves 26 uppercase and 26 lowercase slots for the plain "Script" style, starting at U+1D49C. But eight uppercase letters, B, E, F, H, I, L, M, and R, and three lowercase letters, e, g, and o, were never assigned a code point in that range. These 11 "holes" exist because Unicode had already encoded script-style glyphs for those exact letters decades earlier, in the Letterlike Symbols block (U+2100 to U+214F), for use as math notation. For example, U+212C SCRIPT CAPITAL B and U+211B SCRIPT CAPITAL R were already in use for physics and math formulas before the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block existed.

Rather than duplicate those glyphs, the Unicode Standard left the corresponding Mathematical Alphanumeric slots permanently unassigned and expects implementations to reuse the older Letterlike Symbols characters instead. A generator that skips this step outputs an unassigned code point for those 11 letters, which most fonts render as a blank box or a "tofu" placeholder. Bold Script (U+1D4D0 to U+1D503) is fully and sequentially assigned with no holes, so it needs no patching. The Elegant Italic style (U+1D434 to U+1D467) has exactly one hole, a lowercase "h", patched from U+210E PLANCK CONSTANT.

Five capital Fraktur letters, C, H, I, R, and Z, have the same kind of gap for the same reason: Unicode had already assigned Black-Letter glyphs for them in the Letterlike Symbols block. Gothic Reverie (plain Fraktur) and Gothic Intrigue (Bold Fraktur) both map those five letters to their Black-Letter equivalents. The Modern Clarity, Whimsical Melody, Harmonic Essence, and Square Essence styles come from sans-serif, bold italic, and Enclosed Alphanumeric Unicode ranges that were assigned with no gaps, so they need no patching at all.

The eight decorative styles, Harmonious Vibes, Gastronomic Fusion, Glamour Glyphs, Majestic Melody, Linguistic Lovewind, Cocktail Finesse, Sweet Delight Elegance, and Garden Fresh Elegance, are not separate Unicode letterform blocks.
