How do I test SMS and OTP on real devices?

Pick a SIM-enabled device from the TestMu AI real device cloud, trigger an SMS-based login or sign-up, and read the OTP on-screen in the live session. You can also validate phone-number verification and SMS-interrupt handling on the same device. On the App Testing Dashboard, open Advanced Settings and turn on the SIM Enabled toggle. Choose the Country, Carrier, and SIM Type. Launch a real device session from the dashboard. Open Switch in the session toolbar to check the Phone Number, Region, Carrier, and SIM Type. Can I automate OTP and SMS verification?

Yes. Set the enableSim capability to request a SIM-enabled device, and use simOptions to pick the region, carrier, and eSIM. Both are Appium capabilities, passed when the session starts. Trigger the SMS from your backend, then poll and read incoming SMS in your Appium script to extract the OTP. Run the complete flow in parallel across hundreds of real devices in CI. How do you test email verification flows?

Open the email client on a real device or webmail in a real browser, then confirm that verification emails, magic links, OTP emails, and password resets arrive and work end to end. Because the inbox runs on real hardware, you also catch spam-folder and deliverability issues.

Which devices and carriers support SMS and OTP testing?

SMS and OTP testing runs on 13 SIM-enabled phone models. Android: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, S25, S24, and S23, and Google Pixel 9, 7, and 6. iPhone: 16 Pro, 15 Pro, 14 Pro, 14, 13, and 13 Mini. Carriers are T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T in the United States, Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone in India, and Three in Ireland. Android devices use a physical SIM. eSIM is available on selected iPhone models in the United States and Ireland.

Can I test two-factor authentication and login flows?

Yes. Two-factor authentication is a core use case: trigger the login, receive the real OTP on the device, enter it, and confirm the authenticated state. This works for manual mobile app testing and automated runs alike. For authenticator-app 2FA, KaneAI generates the six-digit TOTP code at runtime from the shared secret key. TOTP is the time-based one-time password algorithm defined in IETF RFC 6238. NIST SP 800-63B classes out-of-band codes sent over the public telephone network, such as SMS, as a restricted authenticator, so test both methods if your app offers them.

Is SMS and OTP testing secure for regulated apps?

Each session runs on an isolated device that is wiped after use, with traffic encrypted in transit. For regulated teams, a private real device cloud keeps SIM-based messaging tests behind your own firewall, backed by SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and HIPAA-ready controls.
