AngularJS Browser Compatibility: Issues and Fixes

AngularJS browser compatibility explained: the browsers AngularJS 1.x supports, the IE fixes from its docs, Browserslist prefixes, and how to test legacy apps.

Last Updated on:

AngularJS 1.x apps that are still in production tend to break in the same few places across browsers. The usual causes are interpolated attributes in Internet Explorer, CSS that depends on vendor prefixes, and large scripts loaded upfront.

The framework no longer receives fixes, so every workaround below is one you apply in your own code. Testing on the browsers your users still run is how you catch what slips through.

TL;DR

AngularJS 1.x supports the latest Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Safari for iOS, plus Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11, the browsers its own test suite ran against. Most of its browser bugs come from attribute interpolation in Internet Explorer, and official AngularJS support ended in January 2022.

  • Internet Explorer interpolation: The AngularJS docs say style="{{ }}" fails in Internet Explorer, even IE11, so ng-style and ng-attr-* directives replace interpolated style, type, value, and placeholder attributes.
  • IE8 and older: AngularJS 1.3 dropped IE8 support. Only AngularJS 1.2 still supports it, and the project never ran its tests on IE8 or earlier versions.
  • Vendor prefixes: Autoprefixer adds CSS prefixes from Can I Use data for the browsers listed in your Browserslist config, so your source CSS stays unprefixed.
  • Angular v22: Current Angular supports the Baseline "widely available" set of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, so migrating off AngularJS also drops Internet Explorer support.

AngularJS Support Status in 2026

AngularJS support officially ended in January 2022, according to the AngularJS version support status page. The code stays available on GitHub, npm, and the release archive, but the repository is archived and accepts no new issues or pull requests.

Angular is a separate framework, not a newer AngularJS release. The Angular versions reference lists v22 as actively supported, with a browser set built on Baseline "widely available" releases. The Angular vs AngularJS comparison covers what changes in a migration.

Which Browsers Does AngularJS Support?

The AngularJS FAQ lists the browsers its test suite ran against. The table compares that set with current Angular.

BrowserAngularJS 1.xAngular v22
Chrome, Firefox, SafariLatest versions testedBaseline "widely available" releases
Safari for iOSLatest version testedNot listed separately
Microsoft EdgeNot in the tested listBaseline "widely available" releases
Internet Explorer 9 to 11Supported; unit tests ran on all threeNot in the browser set
Internet Explorer 8 and olderAngularJS 1.2 only; dropped in 1.3Not in the browser set

The FAQ adds that an untested browser can still work when it shares a tested engine, such as Opera 15 or newer, which uses Blink.

Browser Compatibility Issues in AngularJS

The AngularJS Internet Explorer compatibility guide documents the failures that show up most in legacy apps.

  • Interpolated attributes in IE - Internet Explorer reads some attributes before AngularJS interpolates them. For a button, IE overwrites type="{{ someExpression }}" with type="submit", and progress values reset to 0 the same way.
  • Interpolated style - style="{{ someCss }}" works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, but not in Internet Explorer, including IE11.
  • Textarea placeholders - An interpolated placeholder on a textarea throws an error in IE10 and IE11.
  • The disabled attribute in IE11 - On an element with descendant form controls, it can stop ng-model inputs from reflecting the model and disable descendant selects.
  • Prefix-dependent CSS - A property that renders in current Chrome can still need a vendor prefix in the older Safari or Firefox releases your users run.

How to Fix Common Browser Issues in AngularJS

Replace each interpolated attribute with the directive the IE guide names. ng-style takes an object of styles, and the ng-attr-* directives set the attribute only after AngularJS evaluates the expression.

<!-- Breaks in Internet Explorer, including IE11 -->
<div style="{{ boxStyle }}"></div>
<button type="{{ buttonType }}">Save</button>
<progress value="{{ percent }}"></progress>
<textarea placeholder="{{ hint }}"></textarea>

<!-- Works in IE9, IE10, and IE11 -->
<div ng-style="boxStyle"></div>
<button ng-attr-type="{{ buttonType }}">Save</button>
<progress ng-attr-value="{{ percent }}"></progress>
<textarea ng-attr-placeholder="{{ hint }}"></textarea>

For the IE11 disabled bug, do not name a custom attribute directive disabled on an element that contains form controls.

For CSS, write unprefixed rules and let Autoprefixer add the prefixes. It reads Can I Use data and the browsers you list in a .browserslistrc file or a browserslist key in package.json.

# .browserslistrc for an AngularJS app that still serves IE11
> 0.5%

For slow first loads on older devices, split a large app into modules and load feature code when a route needs it instead of shipping one upfront bundle. The AngularJS testing guide covers unit and end-to-end tests that catch regressions after these changes.

How to Test an AngularJS App Across Browsers

Test on the exact browser versions in your analytics, not only the current ones. AngularJS gets no fixes for new browser releases, so a browser update can break an app that passed last quarter. The cross browser compatibility guide covers how to build that browser list.

  • Live debugging - TestMu AI Real-Time Testing opens live sessions on 3,000+ browser, OS, and virtual device configurations with built-in DevTools, so you can inspect a reported IE11 bug where it happens.
  • Internet Explorer coverage - TestMu AI offers Internet Explorer browser testing for apps that still serve IE users.
  • Regression runs - The same end-to-end suite can run in parallel on the TestMu AI Automation Cloud Selenium grid across 3,000+ browser and OS combinations, with no local grid to maintain.

Next Steps for Legacy AngularJS Apps

Pull the browser versions from your analytics, open each one in a live session, and replace any interpolated attribute the IE guide lists. The desktop browser real-time testing docs show how to start a session, and TestMu AI cross browser testing runs the same checks at scale.
