Developing AI Agents for Disability and Self-Determination: Lessons from Project RAISE
Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform how individuals with disabilities access information, make decisions, and advocate for themselves. However, the most effective AI tools are not designed solely for people with disabilities but with them. This presentation shares lessons learned through Project RAISE and related initiatives focused on advancing self-determination, self-advocacy, and inclusive technology development.
Central to this work is the belief that people with disabilities should be active partners in the creation of AI agents. Rather than serving only as end users, individuals with disabilities can contribute their lived experiences, expertise, and perspectives throughout the design process. Their involvement helps ensure that AI agents address real-world needs, use accessible language, and support meaningful outcomes across education, employment, and community settings.
The presentation will highlight emerging approaches for engaging self-advocates in the development, testing, and refinement of AI agents that promote self-determination. Examples will demonstrate how AI agents can support goal setting, self-advocacy, transition planning, employment preparation, and access to community resources. Participants will also learn how disability-centered design can improve the relevance, accessibility, and effectiveness of AI tools.
Drawing on the principles of Project RAISE, the session emphasizes capacity building and authentic partnerships between researchers, educators, technology developers, and individuals with disabilities. Attendees will explore practical strategies for creating AI agents that empower users to make informed choices, express their preferences, and take greater control over their lives.
The presentation concludes with recommendations for future research and practice, highlighting the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities are not only beneficiaries of AI innovation but also co-creators shaping its future. Lisa Dieker:
Dr. Lisa Dieker is the Williamson Family Distinguished Professor of Special Education at the University of Kansas (KU), the #1 nationally ranked program, where she directs the FLITE (Flexible Learning through Innovations in Technology and Education) Center. Dr. Dieker's research focuses on harnessing the power of teachers working across a variety of settings, with a focus on teacher education, special education, and innovative uses of technology. Before KU, she was a Pegasus Professor at the University of Central Florida, serving as the Lockheed Martin Eminent Scholar and advising over 100 Ph.D. students. She has managed over 75 grants amounting to more than $30M. She has provided over 150 keynotes, produced 12 books and over 100 articles and chapters, and served as an editor or associate editor for five journals in the field. She holds six patents in simulation and education.
