Why Does AI Suddenly Need Forward-Deployed Engineers?

Forward-deployed engineers are not new. For years, they have worked between complex products, difficult customer problems and real-world delivery.

So why has AI suddenly made the role feel like the future of engineering?

Is the current excitement recognition of a proven model—or an industry-wide attempt to solve the uncertainty of AI adoption by creating a new kind of "everything engineer"? Does the role represent a durable shift in how technology will be built and deployed, or is it a temporary answer while products, organisations and skills catch up?

This talk looks beyond the title to ask what is genuinely changing—and what may simply be old work amplified by new hype.

Key Takeaways:

  • Takeaway

Understand why forward-deployed engineering has re-emerged so strongly in the AI era, despite not being a new model.

  • Takeaway

Separate the enduring value of the role from the hype surrounding its current label.

  • Takeaway

Examine whether the "everything engineer" expectation strengthens delivery or dilutes technical and domain expertise.

  • Takeaway

Identify the skills worth building for the long term, regardless of whether the FDE title survives.
